One question,

Where was the adult supervision while this was going on?
I understand the philosophy of boy lead patrols in Boy Scouts - but a patrol or 11-13 year olds on their first??? campout.

Kinda reminds me of a early Boy Scout campout from my youth. We were throwing sticks with burning embers in the dark and watching them flip. Boy, when we got caught we were in trouble. Funny though, I don't remember what the punishment was.

Sounds like a great teachable moment....point by point :-)

I believe in letting boys make their mistakes to a point. That point is where they jeopardize the safety of themselves and their fellow Scouts. Sounds like these boys did not have the technical background to get the job accomplished. I'm I wrong in assuming this?

Of course this is just my opinion :-)

Subject: [RR] Cobra Patrol.. what would YOU do?

Cobra patrol is made up of 6 boys who have been
part of the troop for a year or so.. They are ages
11-13 and have several unique personalities<G>

On the camp-out Sat. night, in a State park's primitive
site where fires are permitted.. The cobra patrol buit
a small fire and had trouble getting it to go...

(It was cold/damp about 38F)

*Investgation is on-going, but it appears that they
tried to heat candles on the propane stove to dump
hot wax on the fire, as it is evident that the stove
is covered in spilt wax of some sort..

Next.. "someone" in the patrol had a "IDEA" and began to try
to untwist the fitting off the regulator to the stove that
feeds gas from a bottle of Coleman fuel..  They discovered
that there was a safety device on the hose and also that they
had worked so hard with a Leatherman tool that the fitting
was ruined.. so "someone" decided to just cut the hose off.

Suddenly- they had a open gas line.. and stuck it in the fire
pit.. and built a BLOWTORCH!

This had them excited.. and they started to yell loud enough
to attract attention..

Just as a Adult leader looked into their camp, "someone" in
the Patrol picked up the burning bomb and started to wave it,
or chase others around with it...arrrrrrr

This shook up the bottle and it flared up and came back up
the hose with fire!

(overheard) "turn it off! I SAID TURN IT OFF!!"

*Further evidence is that "someones" coat caught fire.. or
was use to try to put out the flames..

Shortly-----*!
--------------

Senior Patrol Leader (Sr.Guide) and his staff and Adults
converged on the Cobra patrol in the dark.. and asked what
had happened..

*No one in the Cobray patrol knew!
==================================

*In addition, the Patrols food.. bought by the Patrol was
dumped on the ground and 2 dozen eggs were thrown around the
campsite.  Open knives and a saw were found beside a living
tree that was about to be cut down.

What would YOU do?
