Thank You so much for takeing the time to run this situation
through your minds, as it is a real time exercise in leadership.
Here's a report on "what happened" with T328 and the Cobra's..
7pm.. Meeting starts and SPL calls it to order and holds "Flag"
Patrol inspections and then a overview of the nights agenda.
7:30 "Orienteering-Compass" taught in a three station round-robin
series of hands-on skill presentation by the SPL staff and
Troop guides. 45 Scouts were split into three groups of
12 (2 patrols each) with visitors filling in..
7:30 Parent meeting- Scoutmasters welcome new parents with a overview of
the Troop, events,fees and opportunities..
8:00 Scoutmaster breaks into subgroup with all leaders that were
involved in the overnight camp. (*myself present) Brief report
on facts and open discussion of consiquences.. Scoutmaster is
very displeased that *Leadership failed to check the situation
as it un-folded, but is backing SPL in his judgement.
8:30 Closeing announcements- moment of silence. Scoutmaster
reminds everyone that Scouting is "24-7-365" and it is a
agreement you make "on your Honor" to be a Scout.
8:30 SPL closes, and calls Cobra Patrol to stay in place.
8:35-9:00 Cobras stand in place and Scoutmaster and SPL staff
meet, with Adult leaders preserveing the privecy of
the openly viewed session.
*In the session-
Scoutmaster- "Guys, from what I'm hearing you can't seem to work
togather as a team to camp safe.. *Why?"
COBRA PATROL- "It wasn't us.. ahh we tryed then SPL came over to yell
and then.. *I didn't do anything.. we were cleaning the camp and..
Scoutmaster- (rocking on his heels and hat brim low with "the eye")
"I'm hearing lot's of excuses, but little explinations for your behavior-
I'm of the opinion that you can't be trusted to be on your own, with
the freedom we have allowed.. perhaps you can't even act as a patrol
should act"
COBRA's- "..weeell SPL didn't need to make us feel so ashamed..
we were just.."
Scoutmaster- "I'm hearing more excuses but that don't answer the
question rasied by the facts of distroyed equipment and abuse of
your patrol gear. *You know don't you it is a CRIMINAL ACT to
deface and cut trees in a state Park" (More rocking, and "the eye")
COBRA's- .....silence ...more silence
*then Caleb Koffman young scout speeks- "I'm thinking I know what
happened and I'm ashamed to be a Cobra. I think SPL was right to
get mad.. and I was glad to see that he showed up to stop what we
were doing. I want to appoligize to him, and to you Scoutmaster for
my behavior.. (he turned) *And I think we all should appoligize.
*Silence..
(Scoutmaster remains cool.. continues to rock and glare at the
Cobra patrol)
Cobra's- "Well.. I'm sorry too, I appoligize ect" except for 2
boy who found they had something stuck in their throats... They
began to squerm and fidget, and get red faced.. "ahh-er sorry"
*Scoutmaster-
"Thanks guys for filling me in on your perspective, I think
for now you may assume that you are being watched and that you
Josh Hertz are removed as patrol leader. (brief silence)
*I'm instucting SPL join your patrol or assign whoever he
thinks best to instruct you or refresh you in proper Scout
conduct.. in time you may be allowed to remain a patrol,
but if not you will be re-assigned and that will be the end of
Cobra patrol.
Next week, be prepared for a brief Board of review that I
want you individualy to attend, made up of the SPL staff and
myself, and as a result of what happens there, decisions will
be made.
Remember your actions and attitudes are yours to control,
You are the ones who choose what you will do.. Thanks guys."
