This borders on off-topic, but it could be a situation that is being
faced by some boys in your outpost. How would you respond to one
of your rangers asking about this or how would you respond if it
were your boy?

My oldest son who is 16 and my oldest daughter who is 13 are both
in student council at their schools. My son, Allen, came home a
few weeks ago and informed us that he had to be at the school at
9 on Saturday morning to set up for a school dance. We gave him
permission and he went to help set up. When he returned that afternoon,
he told us that he had to be at the dance and stay afterward to
help clean up. The clean-up would probably last till about 1 AM.
At this point we decided he would not go to the dance or be available
for clean-up.

We spoke to the student council sponsor(one of the teachers) the
following Monday and she confirmed what Allen had told us. She explained
to us that since the student council was sponsoring the dance, all
the student council members were required to support the dance by
setting up, attending, and cleaning up. When we told her that Allen
would not attend the dance because of religous convictions, she said
that he should have thought of that before joining student council.
She said she would not make an exception for him and that he should
consider not running for student council in the future.

My son wants to continue in student council and my daughter plans
to run for student council when she gets to the high school next
year.

I do not feel that my kids should be excluded from student council
because they do not believe in dancing and refuse to attend the dances.
I plan to meet with the principal of the high school and the student
council sponsor to discuss this with them.

What do you think?

****This is NOT meant to trigger a discussion about Christians and
dancing! ...unless you want to persue it...
