Jonathan,
As I read in the ICS notebook Ranger basics is an eight hour course. Lessons one thru seven, a model outpost meeting and Role Playing. Where do you think the eight hours goes?
How much time should each part take? We did the lessons one thru seven at our District Council in four hours.
The schedule for Ranger Basics is in the front of the book for classes being taught to new commanders:
Session 1: The Royal Rangers Ministry -- 30 minutes
Session 2: The Royal Rangers Team -- 90 minutes
Session 3: Teaching Boys -- 2.5 hours
Session 4: Reaching Boys -- 90 minutes
Session 5: Keeping Boys -- 60 minutes
Session 6: The Royal Ranger Uniform -- 30 minutes
Session 7: Concluding Remarks -- 30 minutes
It sounds like the class you went through was the "transitions" version of the Ranger Basics book.
Ranger Basics (the book) can be used in two different manners. First, is to teach the Ranger Basics course to new commanders. This takes 8 hours, follows the schedule above, and includes the sample outpost meeting and the soul winning practice sessions. New commanders qualify to wear the Ranger Basics patch on their uniform when they have completed this course.
Second, an abbreviated version of Ranger Basics is taught in about 4 hours, then additional transitional material is taught for about 2 hours, giving you the 6 hour Transitions course. This course is designed for commanders who already have one of the existing LMAs (red or blue), and after you complete the course you qualify for the new gold LMA. When using the Ranger Basics book in this manner, there is a modified schedule, as you can quickly skim over the material that the experienced commanders already know.
