One of the things I think about.. is what adventures boys dream of doing one day..
I can tell you that when I was a young man, I had many considerations about just "doing things" with school friends as they had a variety of backgrounds and might not be the best choices for pals that my folks would want. That said, I did admire them playing baseball in the street and running around as a group. Before I was 16 I didn't have way outside of my bike that I could use to go places, and the easiest place "adventure" to go for me was the beaches in South California. Here's what I saw with my eyes, and dreamed... Cars- Surfing- Motorcycles- Sailboats- Jeeps- ..oh yea and Girls<G> *Left on my own, that's the culture I would have explored and at some point, I would have been influenced by.. Left to my own curious nature, the surface attraction was of sport-speed-cool and *Adventure, but we who have survived the years know that such adventures also can pack a seedy side of vices, thrills and dangers un-seen. Royal Rangers to me was more than just another sunday school or church meeting. Yes, a gospel message was at the Ready- but with the program came the potential for *Adventures that I could not facilitate on my own. Just for me.. To visit the high Sierra was worth the pain of a fast cramped all night drive in my Commanders old station wagon or flatbed truck<G> Everything there was *different.. the air cold-clean- the stars could be seen, and the open fire seemed a link to my heritage as a young American "pioneer" explorer.. *If we had never left a resident camp, I would never known how heavy and useless a wet cotton sleeping bag could be! I never would have began to dream of a goose down bag or anything that todays prepared outdoor adventurer finds on the walmart shelf<G> THE REASON FOR OUTDOOR ADVENTURE IS TO EXPAND THE WORLD BOYS DREAM *With a wider view than my bedroom, my walk to school or hitch to "the beach" I began to understand I lived in a large boiling social BIG CITY that had short sighted lifestyles and enviromental handicaps. Wide open spaces of wilderness left me questioning miles of ranch houses and freeways.. All this became the 'stuff of my chioces in what I would do, where I would choose to live and how I would make a living... I would have to become READY for the future, in body,mind and spirit! *Mayby we can minister by provideing wholesome Adventure? What do you think?
