Great.. *I the one who turned the conversation and might do it again right here<G> *When we recruit from the perspective of attracting MEN to work with boys, it may be that we are successful in staffing the ranks with self-serveing intrests. When we plead the "cause": "Boys are going to hell for lack for proper Male role models whitnessing Christ to them" That may be effective in recruting laymen with a call to evangelical alterwork. What does that have to do with the "Wholelistic" job of Ranger Commander? Where in that, did these men bargan to lead in developing moral character or balanceing all the points of the Ranger emblem? *Their "call" is to a Salvation ministry, 1 hour a week with a game. Later down the trail, the facilitation of Outdoor skills or the ingegrity of the merit program becomes secondary to their original "call".. and balance to all the boys welfare is lost. It's too easy to overlook failures in advancement, ranger spirit, pride in the Outpost and event participation with a "Far away gaze into Beulah land" The best intrests of the boys may not be served that way. Reflect on the qualities of Leaders who in contrast raise the Morale of the boys to embrace life, education, ambition's and awareness of resources availible, em-powering boys to find their own way... There were men who came > > because they wanted to get to know the caliber of boys in their church. > It was an answer to men in his church that did not have sons and saw no > benefit in rangers for themselves. I steped on my son's pride yesterday, by e-mailing his High School to inquire about the guidelines they place on US Military recruiting. *My concern was that Josh GMA#3911 will be 18 in Dec. and projected to graduate in June. This last year of school should be un-hindered scholastic achievement. Those last 6 mo's leaves him old enough to walk in and sign enlistment papers on his own. *Sometimes, the call of adventure outweighs reason...and this current era is full of "adventures" needing boys like Josh. I Trust my son, but watchfully guide his progress in prepareing for review by College admissions. I do not trust the US Military to take Joshua Wheelers best long term intrests to heart in "answering questions" at a table set up in his High School lunch room. Last night, Josh asked me "Why didn't you come to me first?" Suddenly Josh flushed red and started to sputter.. (I had steped on his individualisum, pride and he at 17 didn't have his full mind at hand, or care to consider my heart) *He gave me a full dose-<G> *I told him that my question was pointed at his High School staff about informing the parents of what outside influences they welcomed in addition to public education. I shared that "Trusting him" had everything to do with my being involved in his opportunities, and my duty as his Dad was to be more than a "un-informed councilor" *I was his GUARDIAN. I had to walk off at that point.. Cdr.Jen took up the "cause" and in time Josh calmed down. ------*What a GREAT KID! My point about Leadership.. is that we need to know when to step forward for duty and when to step back... in developing something real and more than a superficial relationship with our Rangers.. and our sons. -=D=- Bear's Rule!
