Best keep it in mind if you plan on going to a National Pinewood derby
Race....grin!
We do not use such a box in the Southwest Suburban Section
(Penn-Del). We distribute rules with the event mailing and put
the rules (http://www.swsentinel.crosswinds.net/derbyrules.html) on our website. With that, our tracks are the "gutter" type
where the car rolls down the track and is held in by the raised
"bumpers". We have not had a problem with dragging.

Good point Bob. We have had many cars drag over the years.
3/8 Clearance required.
Don't forget the strip in the middle where
the car sits that has the minimum height requirement. If the wheels do not
touch then the car will not slide down the track.
I saw a similar device at this past weekend's
pinewood derby. It had Plexiglas for the sides.

box
Build a box with the inside dimensions being what your limits are..
ours for So MO Dist is:
2 3/4 wide
7 1/2" long
3' high
I you used 3/8" material you could build one using these
sizes.
1 Bottom 3 1/2" x 7 7/8"
1 End 3 1/2" x 3"
2 sides 3" x 7 1/2"
1 Open end top brace 3 1/2" x 3/8 x 3/8
I just measured off of the one we use.
