Here are my thoughts.  I don't claim to be a Bible schollar.  There is very little about the Bible that I do know.  I am just like the diciples in that I don't understand sometimes and I get it wrong and stray off on a tangent.

Jesus knew that Peter had a sword. In Luke Chapter 22 when Jesus tells the diciples "But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one" they replied with, here are two swords and Jesus tells them that it is enough.

We find Jesus later rebuking Peter for using the sword but I believe he was rebuking him for the way he was using it. Peter was using it to stop the soldier from taking Jesus.  The will of God was that Jesus not be taken but that he willingly lay down his life.  Therefore Peter stepped out of the will of God and thus he was rebuked.  The prophicies were that Jesus would be taken and his followers would flee leaving him alone.  That is why I believe Jesus tells his diciples to take swords.  Because they could possibly come under attack. Jesus wanted them to protect their self.

I honestly believe that God wants us to protect ourselves. And if the best defense is a gun then that is what I will use.  If I see my neighbors coming under attach then I will defend them.  I believe we should prepare ourselves.  We should be ready for what ever awaits us out there.  But stay in the will of God.  Sometimes our zeal for God can get us in the same place it got Peter at Jesus's arrest.  Just because we believe we are in the right doesn't mean that we are.  Paul thought he was doing God a service by pesecuting the Christians.

Got my flame retardant suit on.  Fire away.

Q? Are we to serve as bodyguards, soldiers and prepare for combat
as Christians? How would this seperate us from others "in the world"
who prepare for war?

What was the purpose of Peter packing a sword as a follower
of Jesus Christ? Jesus seemes to know his diciples packed iron.
Was that approved/promoted by Christ or tolerated?

What went thru his mind when the Roman soldier made a move
on Jesus.. and Peter sliced off his ear!

Interested young men (over my sholder) want to know!

*Thanks- ..sound off!
