U.S. Economic Policies Under Fire at Americas Summit

Latin American leaders told President Bush on Tuesday "perverse" U.S.-backed
economic policies had failed their nations although they also agreed to fight
corruption and terrorism together. Bush tried at a 34-nation Americas summit
in Mexico to win back the support of regional leaders after spending the last
two years focused almost exclusively on Iraq and security. Although he earned
backing for modest anti-corruption measures and the fight against terrorism,
he also heard stinging criticism that rampant free-market policies in the
1990s did nothing to ease poverty and forced countries such as Argentina into
deep crisis.

Khatami: U.S. Must Accept Iran Right to Nuke Power

Iran's President Mohammad Khatami called on the United States Sunday to accept
Tehran's right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes if it wants
to see an improvement in ties between the two countries. Cooperation between
Tehran and Washington on relief aid to victims of last month's earthquake in
southeastern Iran led to some signs of rapprochement between the two arch foes
with U.S. officials suggesting a resumption of a dialogue with Iran. But
Tehran has so far rebuffed the U.S. offer to re-start limited talks broken off
by Washington last May, arguing U.S. officials must first change their
attitude toward Iran. Khatami singled out U.S. criticism of Iran's nuclear
program. Iran says its nuclear facilities are geared to producing electricity,
not bombs and last month signed an international protocol binding it to snap
inspections of its nuclear facilities.

Homeland Security Technologies in the Pipeline

Going to the airport soon could resemble a scene from "Mission Impossible"
security personnel snap your photo and scan your fingerprints, analysts run
your name through a web of computer systems and the government assigns you a
color to designate your threat potential. Some of these security efforts are
already in place for foreign visitors but some say the federal government is
looking at a variety of homeland security technologies to broaden and
intensify their reach. And some groups and lawmakers want to ensure these new
technologies don't infringe upon privacy rights.

Terror war 'could last 50 years'

The war on terror could last up to 50 years, a senior UK intelligence officer
has warned. Speaking at a US Government sponsored conference in Las Vegas,
Superintendent Stuart Harrison offered a rare insight into the intelligence
community. He said "remorseless effort" was needed before the world returned
to normal. Superintendent Harrison, a counter-terrorism expert, was at the
conference to share the UK's experiences in dealing with al-Qaeda. "This is
bigger than everything we have ever imagined before", he said, "we are in this
for the long run. It will be 35 to 50 years before we get it cracked."

Bible Belt wary of Dean 'conversion'

Many South Carolina Democrats believe presidential hopeful Howard Dean's
promise to talk about his relationship with Jesus is a calculated ploy to
pander to Southerners in particular blacks participating in next month's
South Carolina primary. "A lot of Democrats here are calling it his 'Road to
Columbia conversion,' " said one senior state Democrat, referring to the
state's capital city. One of Mr. Dean's rivals, the Rev. Al Sharpton of New
York, was skeptical of Mr. Dean's new tack. "It is interesting to me that some
candidates have regional Holy Ghosts," he said. "They're holy in one state;
they're unholy in others." Mr. Dean's announcement surprised many, especially
since he had been so blunt about a relative lack of religious principle. In
one debate with other Democratic candidates, he said he doesn't "go to church
very often" and boasted, "My religion doesn't inform my public policy."
