I started in the Printing trade when *Men were men and Hot Lead the
California case were common.. My intrest was camera work, but all
greenhorn printers start on presses. I went to work in a sweat shop,
with no talking and a strict code of conduct.

"How things were done" was with a glare from a Leadman.. *I mean..
you did it his way ..or take the hyway..yur out! No debate!

"How you learned.." was by surviveing mistakes and a swift rebuke from
the Leadman... I got it full blast once.. and asked the man "who showed
him
what to do?" His eye's got firey red.. his cheeks puffed... and his
right eye got tiny
and a boney finger pointed at my nose...

*I'll tell you just once...ONCE GOT IT!

"I learned by watching the machine run..no one taught me. I watched the
gears,
belts and chain, I learned the right pressure from running with my
finger on the
adjusting screw... Ink is a grease and repels water..make the pressure
right on
the offset blanket..learn to feed paper one sheet at a time.. and get
rid of all those
covers and saftey guards... you OIL that machine..."

It may have been 1979 on the wall calendar- but it was 1906 in that guys
head!

You don't grind people into the ground with what you know...and laugh at
them as they learn. When appointed to be a leadman.. *TEACH THE TRADE!

*I just showed a co-worker how to run some postal cards 4- up at a time
and
set them up for cutting on the cutter... I knew what I do seems strange,
mayby easy
whan a novice watches...he was timid as the big knife dropped...

Have you ever been there?
