Dear Duane And Rangernetters:
I am still up, I thought I would be off the internet by now but my provider has either been gracious to me or has forgotten about me. I have been busy this past week and intended to call them to find out whats up but it got away from me. I guess I will go down when I will go down or until my new job turns full time and I can pay my bill. Right now I feel guilty for using the internet service and not paying my bill.

I can't count the number of times I have had a trainer on a job using those training methods and we still have it here in 2000, even at good old Motorola which brags about their excellent training and management techniques. Until now, I found my drill sergeant to be the most effective teacher and he was none too pleasant ( for my own good). I use my negative experiences not to teach that way as a Ranger Commander. Back in November I walked out on a boss that never had a pleasant thing to say and used the Lords name in vane on a regular basis. That is why I am in such a predicament.
I have been working during the last three weeks for our countys Special Education district, training to drive a bus. I am impressed with the professionalism they have in their training methods. I passsed my written test for CDL, Transportation and School Bus with flying colors and now am learning how to drive. If this is the way it will be while I am working as a real bus driver I will have finally found my place in the work world. I really enjoy driving.
I noticed something today while I was cleaning the church. A father whose son is in Buckaroos asked us to watch his son while he went across the street. The boy wanted to help me clean. I could have done the job faster without having to stop to give him instructions and make sure he did the job right but I chose to let him help. I asked him first if he was able to do a certain task and then let him do it. I found myself praising him when he completed the job. He was amazed at a lambs wool duster that extends to a longer length and was thrilled to use it. When his father came back he was amazed that I even got his son to work.
Because I am starting to get praise on the job. I am now giving praise to others myself.
Even my dog is benefitting from it. He went for a walk this week and got brushed daily.

I need this at this time because I am going to have to give our Pioneers a little bit of a demand to finish their advancements. Letting the boys work as a team and giving their own input to how things are done is going a long way. The reason I say I too much is we are so short leaders in our outpost that we are spread to one leader for each age group. I don't have any Lt. Commanders working with me. I thank the Almighty God he sent me a boy that already has good leadership qualities and has high respect from the boys.

I started in the Printing trade when *Men were men and Hot Lead the

greenhorn printers start on presses. I went to work in a sweat shop,
with no talking and a strict code of conduct.

"How things were done" was with a glare from a Leadman.. *I mean..
you did it his way ..or take the hyway..yur out! No debate!

"How you learned.." was by surviveing mistakes and a swift rebuke from
the Leadman...  I got it full blast once.. and asked the man "who showed
him
what to do?" His eye's got firey red.. his cheeks puffed... and his
right eye got tiny
and a boney finger pointed at my nose...

*I'll tell you just once...ONCE GOT IT!

"I learned by watching the machine run..no one taught me. I watched the
gears,
belts and chain, I learned the right pressure from running with my
finger on the
adjusting screw... Ink is a grease and repels water..make the pressure
right on
the offset blanket..learn to feed paper one sheet at a time.. and get
rid of all those
covers and saftey guards... you OIL that machine..."

It may have been 1979 on the wall calendar- but it was 1906 in that guys
head!

You don't grind people into the ground with what you know...and laugh at
them as they learn. When appointed to be a leadman.. *TEACH THE TRADE!

*I just showed a co-worker how to run some postal cards 4- up at a time
and
set them up for cutting on the cutter... I knew what I do seems strange,
mayby easy
whan a novice watches...he was timid as the big knife dropped...

Have you ever been there?

*That's were the boys are..now! Mr.Commander!

GIVE AWAY THE FARM!
DON'T HOLD ANYTHING BACK!

*Explain that our job as Commanders is not to preserve our expert
knoledge,
but rather to give away the job we do...!!! *Yea yur good.. you
know...ect.

But TEACH the trade!

Commanders should actively work to re-place them selves!
*Demonstrate- then get out of the way!
*Review- then listen!
*Judge easy- and praise heavy!

Our job is to build Leaders!
Exibit GRACE! mercy! understanding! friendship and a smile!
..make the job look easy!
