In my former section the LTC was taught as a patrol system, by the
time we were to have our second meeting (our meetings are spread out one
Saturday a month for 6 months) we were to have our patrol name and standard,
yell and song
and the requirement to pass was to either take NTC or the Section would
provide a campout over a weekend to satisfy the requirement. Many people
have run into difficulties if the LTC was just crammed into a single weekend
and the general position was that the way they had it presented was the one
that was working the best.
With me, I did not finish the LTC with the rest of the class partly
because it was asking for stuff to get done in too short a period. I went
and took the rest of the summer to conduct the activities that it had asked
and satisfied the requirement at least 300% better than what I could have
done if I crammed it. I believe that I got more out of the experience
because I finished in September of '96 as opposed to June '96. My work was
more thorough and more correct and done with a lot of care because I had
really sank my heart into it. Much of the difficulties I have is that when
it comes to work like that believe it or not, I do have a learning disability
that I had to wrestle with, but once I understand something, I'm right on it.
Sometimes I miss the plank and fall off the boat, but at least I can swim
and get back on it.
God blessed me at the LTC campout, even though I had to dodge meadow
muffins at every step and rogue cows, I made some very valuable friendships
there. I am of the belief though that both LTC and NTC shouldn't be taken
together though the teaching needs to be hand in hand. NTC was a refresher
course, a little tougher than the LTC because we didn't have Sr Guide to
stare down at the LTC, and the schedule was no where close to being so much
by the clock, though we had things to do, we were not as "Pressured" to hurry
up and get things done. NTC was a little tense for me, mostly in part
because I was battling diabetes at the same time and keeping a watchful eye
on my activity levels and sugar levels so that I wouldn't pass out from
Hypoglycemia. I feel that NTC should compliment the LTC & vice versa.
I feel that it should not be a requirement to serve on a staff because I
believe that puts handcuffs on God and that blessings are going to get lost.
Not everyone can make it to an NTC or even has the resources to go.
I went because a dear brother of whom was here on Rangernet made it
possible for me to be there. I have been so thankful ever since
