If they didn't grow up with it (camping experience), then they need to apply
themselves and learn it like I did. I carried a piece of 1/4" nylon rope
with me and whenever I had a chance I practiced knots (clove hitch, bowline,
square, taut line) - even in the john.
For compass, I bought "how to be expert with map and compass" and studied
it. I learned the knots and basic compass at LTC, then worked on building
those skills.
> It took me all four days of NTC to learn how to do an eye-splice.
The eye splice was not taught at NTC. We were given a photocopy of how to
do it and handed a piece of rope and told to tie it. What kind of
"training" is that? I didn't need to drive 5 hours for that, they could
have mailed it to me.

Then change NTC to NLTC - National Leadership Training Course.
