His name is Thomas Hooper. On the campout he attended with us back in the
spring he didn't sleep well because he pumped up his air mattress to much and
kept rolling back and forth on it. He would talk about some of his war
experiences. He was not in a fighting unit, but his job was to put up
telephone lines. He told about meeting Eisenhower once. One of the funniest
things he told about was the solders would rustle cattle in order to have
fresh meat.
He was transferred out of Belgium just before the Battle of the Bulge. He
has survived his wife and lives alone now. He spoke about going to a reunion
of fellow solders of his unit this past summer. Of how there is not many of
them left. I am honored to have this gentleman among our Ranger ranks. I
know that at the age of 86 he would be an inspiration to many. He is to me.
He is a testimony to The idea that we can always be of service to God if we
make ourselves available.
