I think my favorite memory was from S. New England, about 1985.
It was the first time I heard Jim Barger speak. With our outpost was
the District Buckaroo of the Year, who would turn 9 on the Wednesday
after the Pow-wow.
Saturday night we had a great Council Fire service and that
Buckaroo got slain in the spirit and woke up speaking in tongues!
Sounds great, but we didn't teach kids about manefestations of the
Spirit, he was wondering what had happened to him and was near shock.
While our commanders (all 3 of them) stayed at the fire to
council with this boy, they left our Sr. Guide (me) in charge. It had
been wet, so the Sr. Commander poured some Coleman fuel into a paper
cup -- just in case we couln't get the fire started. Well, for the
first time in my 2+ years of Rangers I had trouble getting a roaring
fire going. I did get a small one, but that didn't satisfy us.
Fortunatly Cmdr. Griz had provided a solution.
I think I shut my eyes, because I don't remember the resulting
fireball, but was told it was fantastic. Silently, it completly
engulfed my head, without touching a hair, and dissapated into the
night.
I was dissapionted that night because I was not allowed to be
part of the counciling session; but the happenings back at the
campsite have provided an entertaining lesson for several groups of
boys since.

             Dale
