> Duane,
> We took 15 boys to Maranatha Farm this weekend for an advancement
> campout and a little spring cleaning of the property. It was quite cool,
> about 20 degrees cool; yet the boys survived and had a great time. We
> covered three areas: Knots, Tool Craft, and Fire Craft at Pioneer levels
> Powder horn through Long Rifle.

*I found an amazeing intrest in firecraft on a winter campout... even from
the boys of the back row<G>

*Whats 20F like fer camp'n? Out here it would be solid Ice and grey
skies.. But some folks told me in Colorado 20F means sunshine and yah
might even get down to a T-shirt in the sun!

That seems tolerable... *I have never been so cold as a Oregon winter<G>
mayby it was 40 or mayby warmer... but wet and with no way to warm up
and dry out you lose heat so fast... *I hit the hypothermia button!

We have a BIG mountian out here called "Mt.Hood" and I was trying to climb
it with a group of mountianeers... The weather came in and the wind picked
up and the walk DOWNHILL was a killer...

We camped using the patrol method. I
> stayed out of the way as much as possible. Let the boys make their
> mistakes and work it out on their own.

*At NTC they show a slide of Commanders sitt'n in chairs drinking a
Coke<G> ...calm and cool they protray the Commander who does everything as
a micro-manager...

That throws a lot of folks off... *for why not TRY to win best camp?

*Think about loveable SMOKEY BEAR<g>
-----------------------------------
"ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT FOREST FIRES!"
-----------------------------------

*Smoky... just sort of stands there in uniform.. "reminding you"
to be carefull with fire... He's big.. he's tuff he's fuzzy!

*Actual firefighting is a tuff skill for a Bear to accomplish<G>
so for years "Smokey" let's smokejumpers and firefighters do the work<G>

...So winning "Best Camp" ought to also be a example of a group of
Rangers working togather, *working things out.. just the way boys
do all the time... *except with the additional ethic of the Pledge-
Motto and the Code...

The boys really do learn more,
> when we let them work things out for themselves. I got my banjo out and
> we sang songs around the camp fire. Even made up some new patrol songs.
>
> I love Rangers! Don't you?
>
> D. Bishop

*Yup... *It's a beautiful life<G>
