If I remember correctly they don't try to free Jim in the book "Tom Sawyer"
That is in the "Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn".

In the story about Huck Fin and Jim going down river, the plan was to float
down to Cairo Missouri where the Ohio and Mississippi meet, then take a
steam boat up the Ohio River to a free state like Ohio. How ever they
missed it because of the fog.
