(Here's an idea plan for one of your meetings - This is one I did with my
Buckaroos)

Salt:
True or False? - EVERY living thing needs salt to survive, i.e. plants,
animals, humans.
(true) - Without salt living things contract disease and die. Our bodies are
60-70% water and our body fluids, like blood, saliva consist of 9% salt.
(Have your rangers lick the back or palm of their hands and ask what it
tastes like). Salt helps to thicken our body fluids. Too much salt can make
your blood too thick and causes strokes and heart attacks though.

Where does salt come from? - (the oceans (sea salt) & and underground- rock
salt). Talk about salt is harvested. At home they can put some saltwater in
a dish and after a few days the water will evaporate leaving the salt
behind).
What is salt used for? (There are over 14,000 known uses for salt. As far
back as the Egyptians 4000 years ago, slaves were traded for salt. That is
where the phrase, "he's worth his weight in salt" came from. Salt was a form
of money. Can you think of what salt is used for today?....
(Of course my Buckaroos said: making slugs and snails bubble up).

Today salt is used for aiding in healing. How many of you have had sore
throats and had to gargle with salt water? Salt is used in bleach, baking
soda for baking, epsom salt, de-icing roads, grinding tools, making glass,
eating, soda pop, tanning hides, sterilizing....... In fact in the USA, the
most salt used yearly is for melting ice off of the roads.

EXPERIMENT: (what you will need) - 2 clear drinking glasses. 2 raw eggs. 5
spoonfuls of salt. Pitcher of water.

Fill the glasses with water leaving room enough for an egg to drop in the
glass without overflowing. Add the 5 spoonfuls of salt to one of the glasses
and stir until it almost all dissolves. Drop an egg (with its shell on)
into each of the glasses. The egg in the saltwater will float. The egg in
the fresh water will sink. The salt water is denser and holds up the egg.

Devotion: What do you think Jesus meant when he said we are to be the Salt
of the Earth. Did you know in the old testament, the sacrifices were to be
seasoned first with salt? Why is salt significant? God made something as
small as a grain of salt, essential to all life. Are you worth more than a
grain of salt?
