Last night my wife and I rented "Saving Private Ryan." (I was not ready
for the graphic scenes in the movie). I now have a new respect for our
soldiers who serve and have served in the armed forces. I have always
had a respect for our soldiers. But, after seeing this movie and seeing
a "more accurate" picture of WWII at Omaha beach, I never realized what
our soldiers went through to secure a beach head. My grandfather served
in the Navy during WWII. He was at Pearl Harbor during the attack. I
remember him telling me of the attack, and waking up to the smell of
burning oil and flesh. He would sometimes wake up in the middle of the
night sweating and shaking from a dream of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
I remember asking my Rangers one night what the American Flag stood for
to them. I was shocked and sick when most of the older boys (pioneers
and trailblazers) said, "That flag is just a piece of cloth." and "That
flag doesn't mean any thing." Our SR. Commander at the time went
balistic. How sad for todays youth to not realize what sacrifiecs were
given for their freedom and how many lives were lost to keep that flag
adn others free. Let' s, as commanders, remind our boys what that flag
stands for and remind them of the men and women who gave their lives for
that flag adn our freedom.
