Some years ago we had a holiday in France and drove back along the Normandy
coast. There is a town by Omaha beach which opened a "museum". It was simply
a long low hall with tables on which were placed a lot of the everyday
artefacts of the soldiers. Amongst them was a letter from a sailor who was
at the beach head. I cannot remember the full details but it was a graphic
and moving letter. The part I do remember is the sailor's comment that he
was one of the lucky ones - at least he could sail away while the soldiers
had to stay come "hell or high water" and they probably had both. It's well
worth a visit if it still exists and is far better than the official museum
at Arromanches.
