I would encourage anyone working in a staff role to stay as involved in the
local outpost as possible. I know of many district and regional staff
members who are still very involved in their local outpost, as commanders
or senior commanders, or at least as lieutenant commanders. Yes, your staff
position will take you out of your local outpost meetings from time to
time, but when we let our staff positions get in the way of ministering to
boys on a regular basis, we tend to get out of touch with the boys, and
sometimes we may even forget that Royal Rangers is about reaching,
teaching, and keeping boys for Christ because we will get so busy with our
staff responsibilities.
When I served as sectional commander, I was the chairman of our outpost
council and was in every outpost meeting that I could be in. As district
training coordinator, I served as a floating lt. commander, working with
whatever group needed help the most, and filling in for commanders who
couldn't be there. Now while serving as regional training coordinator, I've
been assisting in the weekly meetings, and my pastor just asked me to serve
as senior commander for our outpost.
I think that serving on staff has helped me do a better job as a commander,
but I know that serving as a commander on the local level has continued to
help me be a better staff member.
That's my two cents worth.
