Recreation and boys seems to be a natural pair. My policy is that if
somebody(not a visitor) asks about recreation, it is cancelled.

On the other hand, there are some nights where I will have 15-20 minutes of
recreation at the beginning of the meeting. This sometimes tends to settle
down the boys. If they are really tired, they will have no choice but to
sit down and listen in class.

I have also used extended recreation time as a reward. I will usually tell
the boys 2 or 3 weeks in advance that if "X" number of boys complete a merit
or an advancement level by a certain date, we will have extended recreation
and maybe some pizza. This is a great motivator. I have found that there
is great peer pressure among the boys to do advancement work when I use
this.(warning - attendance will increase on the final night of the
promotion!)
