I read with interest your section on fire starters and I have a couple of suggestions
for alternatives. One is strips of newspaper rolled into loose cylinders and tied with
string. These are then dipped in candle wax or paraffin (which can be obtained in the
canning section of the grocery store). When trying to ignite a fire, you simply place
one of these in a strategic location and put the match in the middle.

Another is to take either sawdust or drier lint, put into the individual sections of
egg cartons and then drip wax over all this. When ready to light your fire, just break
off apiece and you're ready.

"Murphy's Law" was in full swing on my launch of this E-Zine and in the Honor

Can You Believe Holiday Season is just around the corner?
Only 40 days until Christmas! A wonderful gift you can give to many of our soldiers
overseas is a "note from home" letting them know we are still thinking of them. Now is
the time you need to start sending these cards and letters so that they will arrive in
time.
If you would like to send letters, but do not know where to send them, Mike Walton has
given us the name of a Chaplain in Kosovo who would love to hear from any of the
readers here, and the Scouts in their units.

Encourage the Scouts in your area to write asking about his prior assignments and how
he got where he is. (He hasn't been a Chaplain very long.) If you would like to see
your letters go to other soldiers there, address your letter to "Any Soldier" and he
will make sure they get distributed. The soldiers will have to spend the coming
holidays in a strange land away from their friends and family. What better gift can
we give them than bringing a little bit of "America" to them.

November 5, 1999 20/20 News Show Review
by Ed Henderson

On November 5th, 1999 the respected ABC News show 20/20 led with Barbara Walters
presenting the story of a group of boys that were victimized in Lonoke
Arkansas. All through the week the promotional advertisements for the show
focused on the lead story of a peadophile, Mr. Jack Walls who preyed upon
generations of youth in this small town.

Convicted in 1995, 20/20 paints a shocking story of a married, otherwise
well respected pillar of the community who took scouts on campouts where he
provided alcohol, cigarettes, and pornography followed by "initiation
rituals" where he would victimize the scouts. The scouts, shocked, in
denial, and too embarrassed to reveal what happened remained silent until
1992 when one scout told his parents.

At this point Walters & Co. quickly mention that the B.S.A. threw out
Walls, banning him from ever serving in Scouting again, even though he had
managed to intimidate the scouts into all denying any of the charges.
Walls trial lasted three hours and he was found not guilty. Unfortunately
the one scout who first blew the whistle, Doug Hogan, would end up being
the town pariah for the next few years.

At no point in the piece did Walters mention the aggressive approach the
B.S.A. has taken on Youth Protection. The B.S.A. has policies in place to
prevent just such an occurrence. Removed from the movement Walls formed
his own "elite group" of youth and continued conducting monthly campouts.
Unfortunately 20/20 continued to refer to him as a "Scoutmaster" and
continued to show photographs of him in a Scout uniform and continued
referring to his group as "Boy Scout Pack 103" which is itself a rather
basic error.

FYI:
- Boy Scout Policy Position Statement regarding
Homosexual Leadership/membership in the Boys Scouts of
 America Organization:

- This Position Statement was taught at the University of Scouting in Central
Florida Council , October 23d, 1999 as present BSA Policy on homosexuality.
"For more than 80 years, The Boys Scouts of America has brought the moral values of
the Scout Oath and Law to American boys, helping them to achieve the objectives of
Scouting".
"The Boys Scouts of America also places strong emphasis on traditional family values
as being necessary components of a strong, healthy society. The Scouting program is
designed to be a shared family experience"."We believe that homosexual conduct is
inconsistent with the requirement in the Scout Oath that a Scout be morally straight
and the Scout Law that a Scout be clean in word and deed, and that homosexuals do not
provide a desirable role model for Scouts".
"Because of these beliefs, the Boy Scout of America does not accept
homosexuals as members or as leaders, whether in volunteer or professional capacities".
"Our position on this issue is based solely upon our desire to provide
appropriate environment and role models which affect Scouting's Values and Beliefs".
"As a private membership organization, we believe our right to determine the
qualifications of our members and leaders is protected by the Constitution of the
United States".

An era has ended. The last issue of Scouter's Digest, the BI-Monthly newsletter that
has consistently been published by Paul Ferris for the last 14 years, has just been
mailed. Paul Ferris states" After 83 issues, this is the hardest one to write." I
know all of you who have had the pleasure of reading Paul's insights to Scouting, his
reviews of BOY's LIFE and Scouting Magazine, and his "common sense" approach to
dealing with our youth will join me in thanking him for his many years of dedicated
service to Scouting by providing a valuable resource for us all.
I will have some "big shoes" to fill when I premier the new Scouter's Digest Magazine
in January. Paul has graciously agreed to have a column in the magazine version of
Scouter's Digest, and will be a member of the SD Advisory Board. The new version will
feature an expanded format in a "Digest Sized" magazine.

Again, thank you Paul. The seeds you have planted in the minds of Scouts and Scouters
over the last 14 years will bear fruit for years to come. We look forward to reading
your new column in January.

The Dark Sucker Theory
For years, it has been believed that electric bulbs emit light, but recent information
has proved otherwise. Electric bulbs dont emit light; they suck dark. Thus, we call
these bulbs Dark Suckers. The Dark Sucker Theory and the existence of dark suckers
prove that dark has mass and is heavier than light.
First, the basis of the Dark Sucker Theory is that electric bulbs suck dark. For
example, take the Dark Sucker in the room you are in. There is much less dark right
next to it than there is elsewhere. The larger the Dark Sucker, the greater its
capacity to suck dark. Dark Suckers in the parking lot have a much greater capacity to
suck dark than the ones in this room.
So with all things, Dark Suckers dont last forever. Once they are full of dark, they
can no longer suck. This is proven by the dark spot on a full Dark Sucker. A candle is
a primitive Dark Sucker. A new candle has a white wick. You can see that after the
first use, the wick turns black, representing all the dark that has been sucked into
it. If you put a pencil next to the wick of an operating candle, it will turn black.
This is because it got in the way of the dark flowing into the candle. One of the
disadvantages of these primitive Dark Suckers is their limited range.
There are also portable Dark Suckers. In these, the bulbs cant handle all the dark by
themselves and must be aided by a Dark Storage Unit. When the Dark Storage Unit is
full, it must be either emptied or replaced before the portable Dark Sucker can
operate again. Dark has mass. When dark goes into a Dark Sucker, friction from the
mass generates heat. Thus, it is not wise to touch an operating Dark Sucker. Candles
present a special problem as the mass must travel into a solid wick instead of through
clear glass. This generates a great amount of heat and therefore its not wise to
touch an operating candle.
Also, dark is heavier than light. If you were to swim just below the surface of the
lake, you would see a lot of light. If you were to slowly swim deeper and deeper, you
would notice it getting darker and darker. When you get really deep, you would be in
total darkness. This is because the heavier dark sinks to the bottom of the lake and
the lighter light floats at the top. The is why it is called light.
Finally, we must prove that dark is faster than light. If you were to stand in a lit
room in front of a closed, dark closet, and slowly opened the closet door, you would
see the light slowly enter the closet. But since dark is so fast, you would not be
able to see the dark leave the closet. This is proof positive that the dark sucker
theory is true.

The Left Hand Shake

Did you ever wonder why Scouts greet each other with a left hand shake? This is a
tradition started by Robert Baden-Powell and is used in all of the world's Scouting
and Guiding programs where custom accepts a handshake as a form of greeting, as a sign
of friendship. There has been many stories I've heard over the years, but I came
across this article and tend to believe it as the actual truth.
The Left Hand Shake
by Lady Baden-Powell.
"Truth is stranger than fiction".

"When my husband was in West Africa on that campaign in 1895-96 he heard of the legend
of two tribes who lived next door to one another and were always having trouble and
even wars between them. This was very bad and disastrous for both, with cattle
thieving and so on.

"Then the very fine Chief of one of them realizing how wrong it was, gathered his
councilors together and they then decided not to have fighting again, but to try to
come to terms with their warrior neighbors.
"So when, after a time, the enemy came advancing towards them expecting them also to
advance and start fighting, this good army stood still instead of advancing to attack
back.

There was a code of honour which said that an un-armed man who could not defend
himself was never attacked, so this good chief of the peace-loving tribe dropped his
arms and walked slowly out ahead of his men and after standing alone for a moment
walked towards the enemy (who had stopped with surprise at this unexpected turn of
events) and, holding out his left hand after flinging down his shield and spears,
said:

"I come unarmed and I hold out my left hand to you as a sign of friendship and trust.
" We are neighbors and should not live in enmity. From now on we wish to live in peace
and we trust you do do the same and to be friends."

"Well, all those years later when my husband founded the Boy Scouts he knew that boys
and girls like secret signs and so he suggested that we should have and use this
"secret sign" of shaking hands differently from the ordinary way. As we all in our
Movement truly trust each other, this method of our own shaking with the left hand
instead of the right, would be used throughout the movement.

The Left hand is nearer to the heart.

"Whether it is true or not, I for one know that the friendship part of it is as true
for our Movement as it was for those tribes of long ago; and please God it will always
remain part of the backdrop and essence of Scouting and Guiding".

MAKING A CARDBOARD OVEN
An inexpensive (and disposable) yet effective oven can be made for almost nothing.
Select a heavy cardboard box with the lid still attached so as to open like a
refrigerator (a liquor carton works well).
Line the box and door with aluminum foil. Fasten the foil in place with duct tape.
Make shelf supports by punching coat hangar wire through the sides. Two or three
shelves work usually work fine. The lowest shelf should be about an inch from the oven
floor.

Place items to be baked on the upper shelves. Place hot coals in an 8-inch foil cake
pan on the lowest shelf. Each charcoal briquette yields about 50 degrees in this oven,
so plan 7 to 8 briquettes for a 350-degree oven. The cardboard oven works well for
baking biscuits, cookies, cakes, etc. It may take excessive time and charcoal changes
for items such as a roast. For that, get out the dutch oven.

COOKING:
-----------------------------------------------
Eggs on a Stick

Using an icepick or small knife, take a regular "large" egg and carefully poke a small
hole in the ends of the egg just large enough to slide a wooden skewer into it. With
the large end of the egg down- wards, carefully slide the skewer into the hole,
through the egg, and out the other end so that the egg rests somewhere in the middle
of the skewer. The reason you use the large end is so you pierce the egg yolk when you
push the skewer through. Support the ends of the skewer over some coals, about 4-5
inches above the coals. cook, occasionally rotating the egg, until the egg starts
oozing out of the ends. (approx. 6-10 minutes) Peel, season to taste, and eat.

Hmmm good!.
-----------------------------------------------
SCOUTMASTER'S MINUTE:
-----------------------------------------------
The Scout Motto is: BE PREPARED
"Be Prepared" means you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your
duty. Be Prepared in mind by having disciplined yourself to be obedient to every
order, and also by having thought out beforehand any accident or situation that might
occur, so that you know the right thing to do at the right moment, and are willing to
do it.
"Be Prepared" in body by making yourself strong and active and able to do the right
thing at the right moment, and do it.

___
It Can Be Done
The ones who miss all the fun
Are those who say, "It can't be done."
In solemn pride they stand aloof
And greet each venture with reproof.
Had they the power they'd efface
The history of the human race.
We'd have no radio or motor cars,
No street lit by electric stars;
No telegraph nor telephone,
We'd linger in the age of stone.
The world would sleep if things were run
By those who say, "It can't be done."
