I would give him some questions for his parents like:
1. HOw do you explain the prophecy concerning the city of Tyre,
which God said would be scraped bare and thrown into the sea
a long time before this actaully happened.
2. The best attested document in antiquity is the Bible, with 24k+
extant texts, codices, and manuscripts. Of the NT only 100
words are in question, mostly verb forms like "hath" vs "have",
none of which affect any doctrine, great or small. The closest
contender is Homer's Illiad, of which 100 lines are in question
some of which radically change the meaning of the stanza.
3. If we can trust it historically, why not spiritually? It doesn't
make any sense to say the document contains accurate history and
then say that all of its information concerning God is false.
Let the Holy Spirit be your guide. People can be like diamonds, just
a small tap in the right place can break them apart and let the
light inside. Since salvation is dependent upon Christ, whose life
is recorded in Scripture I would envouarge the boy to trust God for
his parents salvation and atke an active stance via prayer.
You might also find "The New Testament Documents: Are they Reliable"
by F. F. Bruce a useful tool. Features on this topic would be good.
