As I recall, the Christmas tree tradition started in Germany and was
introduced to England by Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria. The
Christmas tree in Germany was used as a symbol of life as it was still in
leaf even in the depths of Winter; so you could say that it fits in well
with Christmas as Jesus was born (i.e. given new human life) in order to
give us new life, Hallelujah.
