Hi all,
I've found the discussion about tattoos to be very interesting. I recently
came across the following on the web site for Fire Iron Frenzy, a Christian
Ska band. The members of this band are all in their early 20's and this was
listed under the frequently asked questions about the band. I think this
young man raises some good points regarding this issue and I thought I'd
share it.

How can you justify having tatoos since the Bible says not to mark our
bodies?

In Leviticus, it says "not to mark your bodies like the heathens do, or trim
the edges of your beard." It's funny to me that people use this verse in the
Bible to say that getting a tattoo is wrong, because most people in the
church today DO trim the edges of their beards. In the Bible, there are
three types of laws: Moral laws- laws that apply to our relationships with
God and other people, Cleanliness Laws- Which were old Testament laws
designed to keep Gods followers ceremonially clean, such as " do not touch
dead bodies, eat pigs, etc., and Ceremonial Laws- laws that were set up to
tell God's followers how to make sacrifices to him. According to the book of
Hebrews, Jesus Christ fulfilled the law, and we are no longer under the law
but rather we are under GRACE. To return to old Testament laws for your
Justification is what the New Testament refers to as "Judeizing". Basically
it says that if we could be fulfilled by the law, CHRIST DIED FOR NOTHING.
So I think it is wrong to tell someone that a tattoo is wrong, based on Old
Testament laws. However, I also think that anyone who goes out and gets ink
permanently imbedded in their skin without thinking about the concequences
for their actions, is stupid.
