In Germany we always had just patches. I think it is very good like this. A
pin is easily attached to your uniform, but a patch has to be sewed on it.
We're having our boys (and girls) sew their patches onto their uniforms
themselves (not their mothers or sisters). Maybe some of them don't, but I
know about some, that are proud of having done that by themselves.
