Greetings All, I believe that I may actually be able to save few dollars for the outpost's overhead if I hold a different kind of Pinewood Derby. A track right now is a real difficulty for us as they can be costly, and we don't have the manpower or ability to fabricate one of our own. So in light of that, we just won't have a track. How are we going to run a race with no track? Simple across the floor. Our cars are not going to meet the same rules and regulation that the Boy Scouts and many of our own fellow outposts meet. Our boys need to have fun, but overhead is a problem, so some ideas and ways to have the fun and the spirit of competition in a wooden car race, I believe is still important. Our cars are going to be a little larger, some would compare them to dragsters or funny cars. The cars are 1 foot long and shaped like a door stop (wedge) made out of pinewood. The back part of the car has a little pocket, cylindrical in shape big enough to hold our source of propulsion. Our cars are rocket powered by using Co2 cartridges normally used for BB guns. The regular Pinewood track uses gravity for it's propulsion, ours will use Co2. We will have lanes set up just like on any track, however the running surface is the floor. These cars are wire guided. On the bottom of every car, there are two little eyelets that the wire will be fed through so the car will go mostly straight across the wire. The cars will stand high enough so that the eyelets don't come in contact with the floor and create too much friction and drag. To start the cars in motion, they will be placed against a firing rack that has firing pins that will trigger the Co2 cartridge. The car races down the wire at an extremely high rate of speed. This race is a good one for the Lane Brain because it is fast, much faster than the average pinewood derby race. LSRAV stands for Land Speed Record Assault Vehicle. I think that this endeavor will be fun and certainly worth a try. I hope that perhaps another outpost could benefit from this little variation.
