The space museum in Hutchinson, KS was great. We left the church Saturday morning at 12:15. We decided that leaving that early would give the boys a chance to sleep on the bus for the 4.5 hour drive - WRONG! Arrived in Hutchinson about 5AM and parked in the parking lot for more sleep. Went to McDonalds for breakfast and then the space center. Left for Belton at 2:30 and had a very tired bunch of boys and men at the church by 7:00 Saturday evening. I'm at work on a Monday morning and still having trouble staying awake! Overall - great trip. ***** Friday night at the church, I spoke to the boys for a little while about speaking styles and how to prepare a devotion. Many of the boys complained that nothing exciting ever happens to them that they can talk about and use in a devotion. (I found this hard to believe.) As we were breaking for snacks, I planned with one of the older boys a basketball game. He was to trip me several times, fall on top of me, let me get past him for a lay-up shot, and several other "planned stunts". I announced that I was going to play a 1 on 1 game with this guy and I wanted the boys to watch me win. After about 5 minutes of 'play', I called the game and had all the boys gather back in the classroom. The idea was to have them describe the game to the rest of the boys(tell a story). I think the plan would have worked except for some disruptive boys. Nobody really told about the game - they made comments about different parts, but could not describe the action in an interesting manner. I plan to do a similar thing later with something other than a sport activity. Some of the boys later understood what I was trying to do and felt they had learned something. Those are ones that I plan to concentrate my mentoring efforts on over the next month or so. After that, those boys should be able to mentor others. In His Service, Allen R.
