Dear Cookie:
I have been a bus driver since February 21 when I took the test for my CDL. I love the job but like any job it comes with problems especially with kids with special needs. I drive for the county transportation that serves primarily special needs and behavioral problems.
In training I remember a state seminar that is geared mainly toward district drivers where they  told us to write them up for the smallest infraction of the rules. I agree that order is part of  bus safety but I found out that doing things like moving to different seats stopping the bus till they settle down works very effectively too.
I drop the kids off directly at their homes or babysitter and it is there I talk with the parents (if they are available) about the childs behavior. That usually works very well, the parents are usually but not always very cooperative.
As a final measure I write a discipline slip. It is crucial that the parents are aware of the incident. I'll pray for you.
Driving bus has helped me as a Royal Ranger Commander, I seem to be more firm when the boys get out of line. I used to be able to dish out discipline but I had a hard time not being cruel about it. Dealing with these special needs kids has helped me to discipline in the right way, with love. Yes, I have prayed about it ,it is God that deserves the glory.

Pray for me
I have a boy on my bus that is rather aggressive and very massive. He likes to touch, pinch and pull hair and especially if they are girls. A day doesn't go by without having to tell him to turn around in his seat. He and a girl think they are in love and another girl thinks she is in love wth him. The other girl is very large and could get violent but she loves to help the little kids and is very gentle around them. She is threatening the girl that is also in love with him. I have these kids sitting seperate on the bus to avoid conflict but there still is a potential threat. I advised my supervisor that the counselors should have a talk with these kids. They have hearts of gold but they have trouble controlling their emotions. I know God will watch over them because they don't fully understand what they are doing but we could use some prayer.

One of the many hats that I wear at the church is that of bus driver/bus
captain.

Last night a 14 year old girl got on the bus that I had not seen for a
couple of weeks.  Not a new girl - she has been riding the bus for over 5
years.

This is a very nice, friendly, cooperative child.  She has always been happy
and joking with everyone.

Last night, her personality had changed completely. She was loud and
obnoxious. She refused to listen to instructions on the bus(and in her
class).  On the return trip, I tried to talk to her about her new attitude
and she started singing to a friend of hers.

I then discovered(talking with her brother and another friend) that over the
past 2 weeks she had been in two hospitals with an eating disorder. It
sounds like the programs that were supposed to help her only helped destroy
her personality and self-esteem.

Please lift her up in prayer and pray that I will have the wisdom to deal
with her and her father effectively.
