Mark,
What we use is a steel tank, like a large pressure tank, mounted over a fire
pit. Pipes lead in & out the one end for cold in & hot out. The cold line
splits to feed both the tank & shower directly. Very simple. This is a
permanent setup. Do be sure it always has water supplied to it to prevent
overheating the tank. We have a large capacity storage tank on a tower that
feeds not only the water heater but supplies cold water spigots in various
places at Ranger Mountain. Many outposts also have smaller wood-burning
water heaters made from [root?] beer kegs. These are for camp sanitation &
hot drinks.
If you'd like a crude drawing of either of these water heaters I can attach
one or put it on my web site.
