Talk about God's protective hand.
I arrive home on Saturday night at 10:45 to hear the most incredible news.
I was gone all day on a school bus trip (I was the driver). SO I sent my
wife to attend our FCF Phase I in my place. She and my 2year old son
(Scott), my 6 year old daughter (Angela), and 2 young men who were going for
their testing headed out for Columbia, MO at 7:30 am. This was just a
normal trip to Columbia. We take this same route several times a year. BUt
this was not any normal day. My fellow commander who is an EMT for Audrian
County had to work. That left my wife to take the boys for their testing.
Everything was going fine until they got on the 54 bypass heading south.
Moments before the second exit into Mexico, MO, a car tried to pass another
going north bound. For those who do not know this is a two-way road. My
wife and Keith (14-yr old Trailblazer) looked up and saw this car trying to
pass. Then they saw the car veer back behind the car it was trying to pass
then it veered back into their lane. The car hit the church van in the
front driver's side which took the most impact. All had seat belts on.
The van rolled on its side. Upon impact my daughter's seat belt snapped
loose. She went flying through the van. Keith who was in the front seat
caught her in the air and blocked her head from going through the passenger
side window. Daniel (17-yr old Challenger) was holding on to my 2-yr old's
car seat. Making sure it wasn't going anywhere. Daniel got Keith our first
so they could pass Angela and Scott through the Driver side long window
since the van was laing on the passenger side. My wife was experiencing
chest pains so she couldn't climb out like the others. Daniel with the help
of a gentleman outside of the van kicked the back door open. My wife
(Shelly) and Daniel got out. WHen helped arrived Shelly asked the patrolman
what county they were in , when she found out that she was in Audrain County
she wanted my fellow commander Greg Weaver (the EMT who was working) (He
hasn't worked a Saturday since last summer). She found out that he was
already at the hospital. Angela had 2 bumps on her head an a bunch of cuts
& bruises. (X-rays found NOTHING wrong at all). Keith had several minor
cuts and bruises on his arms. Daniel had some carpet burn on his arm and a
little on his back. Scott NOTHING wrong at all. Believe me those 5-point
harness car seats work. Shelly was under observation because of her chest
pains. Plus being the driver didn't help either. They found nothing wrong
in any of her x-rays. Sunday morning she even got up and sang with the
worship team. And even spoke about the whole event. My 2 rangers were even
there to tell their stories. Needless to say the church van was completely
totalled. The driver of the other car we understand broke her hip in 4
places. She was driving a Volkswagen Vox. It's utterly totalled. The
wrecking crew put the hood of her car in the back of our church van. It was
a very eerie sight. Someone in our church went and took pictures. I never
want to hear that God's doesn't do miracles anymore. There is one thing
that I do know GOD IS AWESOME. Please keep Shelly, Angela, Scott, Keith,
Daniel and the driver of the other car in prayer. They are going to need
it. Thank you to all who helped in this whole event. Remember this one
thing: GOD IS AWESOME.
