The Boy Scouts of America hold a unique status as a group, in that they
were chartered by Congress feb. 8th, 1910. In reading the charter- it
seems that they have been doing what they were expected, and the
"moral fiber" of the Government has shifted.. in 1910 Congress asked
BSA to instill virtue into Americas youth..
The question asked is if the requirement of being "Morally Straight" is
discriminatory to the civil rights of a Scout Leader under his rights as a citizen.
The Supreme Court has so far upheld Scouts policy, citing it's "privet" status
as an organization. But it's charter has allowed BSA to participate on US
armed forces bases and federal property, and that along with funding that
is tied to current language of anti discrimination may make BSA vulnerable
to a change in it's traditional relationship to the US Gov, agencies.
Considering, that a large portion of scouts join the military, it's no wonder that
the ripple effect could dampen recruiting efforts, and that in turn might spur
congressmen to say *enough political correctness!
The real loss would be in the "morale" arena, and shows in a negative trail
the failure of leadership in our elected officials. When organizations such
as BSA that has had such a successfull track record of creating better
citizens for 90 years comes under fire, you may assume that "nothing is sacred"
The FCC might say that "Religious broadcasting" is in-tolerant of Gay's
and that broadcasting that message over public airwaves constitutes an
act of "hatred and discrimination" and like the ban on tobacco advertiseing,
it might act to "limit" the free speech" of Pastor's like John Hagge of
San Antone-
