I have done this with similar material but instead of a cedar drill I used
hickory which was about 2" in diameter at the point I wrapped the leather to
get more speed on the drill.
I found that if you start slow and slowly increase the speed and pressure on
the drill as the smoke starts you will get a hot ember.
A thin char cloth made out of muslin helps to catch the spark better then a
thicker piece .
I a pinch I have used a touch hole primer and placed a small amount of ffffg
primer powder in the grove cut to the pilot hole.
Also underneath your cedar friction board place another board use a staple
base and a place to lay your char cloth.
The embers you will produce are so small that you will be lucky of you see
them until they burn the char cloth some.
Also this is a good aerobic work out.
