Ok, I hit the internet and pulled about 20 pages of tips off of it for
Firebow Drill making. Read it all and got the general idea down.
I made a 3/4" by 2 3/4" by 14" fireboard out of seasoned Red Cedar (heart
wood). Drilled a small pilot hole about 3/4 inch from the edge and cut a
slot with a 1/8" wide table saw blade to the center of the pilot hole.
Then I took a 1" by 1" by 12" piece of heartwood Cedar and made it a 8
sided octogon along its lenght. I rounded the friction end that goes to
the fireboard to a point and tapered it back. The other end I made it
about 3/8" by 3/8" round end.
I then took a piece of hard maple and cut a hand block about 1 1/2 by 1
1/2 by 3 1/2" long with a 3/8 hole in the center of the block. Put wax
in this hole.
Then I took a pine board about 30" long and put a 3/8 piece of leather on
it for my bow.
I get lots of smoke and make lots of fine powder but no ember yet...... (
I am tuckered out...)
Anyone done this? I mean REALLY Done this? What trick am I missing?
