Amen.
What I'd like to say on the NTC topic is:
If ALL US-NTCs are done in the way MPJ describes in his report, man am I
glad I have been on a german NTC.
I have been serving in german military and I liked it the way it was. Even
the times that came to my mind when I was reading MPJs report.
BUT Royal Rangers is NOT military or a para-military organisation.
So my only hope is that this one NTC MPJ attended was a BIG BIG exception
from what your NTCs are like.
Doing a NTC that way would never work here in Germany for several reasons:
1. As we don't have LTCs as you have them NTC is the primary training camp
for Royal Rangers commanders. Attending NTC is a requirement for being
allowed to start an
outpost here. So what would those who would like to start an outpost in
their
church and have never before been to a Royal Rangers camp think of Royal
Rangers?
I don't think we would have over 250 outposts here in Germany if our
NTCs were done
in the way MPJ describes.
2. For historic reasons we cannot allow Royal Rangers to get any
para-military touch.
I don't think too many parents would allow their children to attend our
meetings if
we had a para-military appearance.
We don't have formation in the (military-style) way it is done in the
US. We don't
have military style flag-parades etc.
The one thing we always have to remember is:
Royal Rangers is a SCOUTING group, a CHRISTIAN scouting group.
These are two points that set us apart from military on the one hand and
other scouts on the other hand.
After all these arguments pro MPJ's report I also have something to say
against it.
1) I don't think we should abolish Senior Guide the way it is (or here in
Germany: Lt. Camp Cmdr (who actually does the same job)). I believe you
need a person like that
to get at least SOME discipline.
2) I don't think reports like that should be published via Internet, where
everyone
can read them. This is an internal US-Royal Rangers discussion (and I
apologize if
I as a foreigner stepped on anyone's toes) and it should be discussed
'internal'.
Fighting a battle like this publicly has never been good for anyone.
