Folks! I've been lurking and laying low on this one, but I think many of you
have missed a key point. Duane said 'IF'

My immediate objection is that grading has no place in Royal Rangers.
Either we as commanders have taught and the boy has learned, or we/he have not.

There is not a lot of in-between.

When it comes to signing off requirements, it's right, or it's wrong.

I will NOT sign off on a knife and ax course and give a boy a pass with
what would
be a 'C'. With a knife and an ax, safety, life and limb are at stake. Why
would
I want to cut a boy loose has hasn't FULLY learned the requirements?

For the same basic reasons, I won't sign off a 'mostly' memorized memory
verse either...

As for 'failing' boys and booting them from Rangers, it's a double-edged sword.
I've given boys 'vacations' and told them not to come for a week or two.
They miss out, but so do I, because I don't get to minister to them.

We all have trouble makers in Rangers. It's pretty much a given. What we do
with them is OUR test. I think that our being there and being consistent and
fair, even to the troublemaker, is a testimony in itself.

Many of these boys do not have any man to look up to or to pattern themselves
after. If we tell them to shove off because they aren't achieving, we have
just placed ourselves in the same box as all the rest of the authority they
see...
I know there has to be a way to challenge them to do better, but tossing them
isn't it.

But I gotta admit that I have absolutely no problem with sending a troublemaker
out into the hall or to sit with his 'mommy' in Bible study for the duration
of an evening. And a one or two week 'vacation' from Rangers also happens.
Sending them away 'forever' or 'until your attitude changes' (same as forever)
shouldn't be an alternative...
