Windshield Wiper Sermon One particular rainy afternoon a mother was driving along one of the main streets of town taking those extra precautions necessary when the roads are wet and slick. Suddenly, the little boy in the front seat spoke up from his relaxed position and said. "Mom, I'm thinking of something". The announcement usually meant he had been pondering some fact for a while and was now ready to expound all that his seven-year mind had discovered. His mother listened with eager ears. "What are you thinking?", she asked. "Well, the rain," he began, "is kinda like sin. And the windshield wipers are kinda like God, wiping our sins away." As the chill bumps raced up her arms, the mother calmly responded, "That's really good, Matthew." Then her curiosity aroused as to how far this little boy would take this revelation so she asked him, "Do you notice how the rain keeps on coming? What does that tell you?" Without hesitation this young theologian answered, "Don't turn your windshield wipers off!" Ever find yourself caught in the rainstorms of life? Vision blurred by sin? Perspective lost in guilt and self condemnation? Life is a dangerous journey for those who continue in this condition. Yet, God has provided a safe haven from the weather in the first of three letters written by the Apostle John. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins, and cleanse us from unrighteousness." I John 1:9
There is no end to the mercy and forgiveness of the Lord in our lives. Certainly, He has called us to a life of holiness. But in those times when we find that we have fallen short of the mark . . . confess it to the Lord and watch the "windshield wipers of heaven" clear your sin away. It's God's promise and it's guaranteed! Just don't turn the windshield wipers off! |
