True.  The original purpose was probably to keep the state out of the church (see 
Roman Catholic Church in Middle Ages for downside), not the church out of the state.

Huh?  Are we so far removed from the original founding of our country?
George Washington and company assumed this to be a Christian nation
and that pledging allegiance to the American flag automatically included
homage to Jesus Christ and God.  I don't think any of those folks could
ever have envisioned how far we have strayed from their original concept
of the USA.  And the 'Separation of Church and State' has been so well
bastardized by the liberals that it bears no resemblance to its original
intent...
