Ah, the good old Dam Busters. Always good for embarrassing moments. When
England hosted Euro '96, UMIST, where I work, made the student halls of
residence available. As Germany was playing at Old Trafford we had a lot of
Germans staying - and where is our refectory where they all had to eat? The
Barnes Wallis Building!!! (For those not well versed in WW2 history, Barnes
Wallis invented the bouncing bomb which was used to breach dams in Germany
and the air crews which delivered them became known as the Dam Busters.)
Also, my son's girlfriend is an Austrian currently living and studying in
England. He brought her to a family wedding celebration where they played a
record called "The Music Man". When I did BSTC we did a very similar song
but I cannot remember the name of it. It goes, "I am the music man. I come
from far away, and I can pla-ay (What can you pla-ay). I play ........." The
singer then goes through a list of things he can play with each old one
repeated as a new one is added. We were on the dance floor when my son
turned to me and said, "Dad, isn't the next one the Dam Busters"? Yes it was
and the action is to make a circle with your thumb and first finger, reverse
your hands so that your palms are on your face and simulate a pair of
goggles with your elbows sticking out like a pair of wings (we did the same
thing in the Scouts to a song called Junior Birdmen). Of course, his
girlfriend asked what we were all doing. I do not think that he ever told
her <g>.
