We (Denver Metro South Section) had an "Advancement Camp" back in April.  It was held at some propertyh adjacent to the church where the Sectional Commander attends (the church owns the property).  The main purpose for the camp was to get the outdoor advancements that are hard to get during meeting times.  The sub-main purpose was to get Trailblazers to get their 1st class and Advanced Camping Merit so that they could join FCF.  Therefore, we offered "coursework" necessary for both of these achievements.

2 years ago, our outpost conductedan "Advancement Day" at my house (I have acreage) where we did much the same, but where it was open to both Pioneers and Trailblazers for the purposes of offering the difficult advancements for the outdoor type advancements.  We set up a compass course, "Cut & Chop" area where we offered toolcraft, a firecraft area, and a campcraft area.  We had a commander manning each area and were able to get a number of boys through many of their advancements.

If you are going to concentrate mainly on merits, tackle the merits where some of the same work can apply towards advancements, such as Camp Safety, Camping, Fire Craft, Cooking, etc.  This way, the boys can not only earn merits, but they can finish any advancements they may be lacking.

Hope this helps.

All,
Has anyone tried a merit workshop at with there outpost?
What I mean is something like Advancment Academy, but done at the local church.  We are haveing a planing meeting tomorrow night and I thought I'd mention this.
I was thinking of doing it on like a Friday night. All day Saturday and ending Sunday morning.
If someone has tried this. I've got a few questions:
1. What was some of the merits offered?
2. What type of time frame was allowed?

Thanks,
Noel "Spirit Rider" Bell
