I am the Expedition Rangers commander for our outpost which meets on
Saturdays. I also serve as a second commander for our Adventure Rangers on
Wednesdays. I suggest you call a local State University admissions office
and ask them if they have the GMA on their list and then ask what weight it
might carry for an applicant. Maybe you can call your District office and
get a suggestion of a GMA from your area who might want to visit your
outpost and answer boys' questions.

We have just had our GMA ceremony for the sixth and seventh boy from our
outpost in the past five years. Along with their GMA pin, they get
letters of congratulations from the President, their US and state congress
and representatives, the governor, the mayor, city council members, as well
as from other selected dignitaries, world leaders, government officials,
Supreme Court Justices, astronauts, sports heroes, authors, scientists,
educators, to list a few. I help the parents compile a list and together we
start sending out announcement letters that serve as a request for
congratulations letters. Most the people we send to are used to the idea of
congratulating kids for earning the Eagle Scout, the National Honor Society,
etc. We briefly compare the GMA to the Eagle Scout in the letter. The boys
collect the letters as they come in the mail. They alone are a proof of the
value of the GMA. Fact: with the GMA, boys are automatically eligible to
apply at any military academy without a congressional sponsor. Boys can use
the GMA to apply for scholarships at colleges and universities (they should
know what the GMA is). And, interestingly enough, all of the GMA boys I
have in my Unit and any others I have ever known or met are all just the
sort of young man I would invest in if I ran a school or gave out a
scholarship. The GMA is not a gift. Military academies and schools will
want him because he has a clean record and his word is believable. His list
of merits and advancements show he can take on anything, that he can make
commitments and keep to them, that he is well rounded. He has good grades
because he has set academic goals for himself and follows them, he tries
hard to succeed, and he does not give up. He does not just say the Ranger
Pledge, he serves God, his church, and his fellow man, he lives by the
Ranger Code, and he makes the Golden Rule his daily rule. Becoming a GMA is
becoming a Godly man, a leader, someone great.

This is one you can borrow from the Boy Scouts. The GMA has all of the
advantages that Eagle Scout has, plus you can add in the foundation of faith
and Christian teaching.
I don't know about getting in to college, but after college, it looks great
on a resume. Of course, people have to find out what it is all about.

They say the purpose of a resume isn't to get you a job, but to get an
interview. Then the interview gets you the job.

When a prospective employer sees "Royal Ranger Gold Medal of Achievement" on
a resume, he thinks, "What in tarnation is that?" So, he schedules an
interview, just to get that question answered, if nothing else.

The answer he gets can be impressive.

Subject: [RR] promoting the GMA

I am beginning to lead a group of Adventure Rangers after taking two years
off from rangers. I have looked over the GMA requirements and I like the
changes that have been made. In a couple of weeks a few new boys will be
promoted up and we will have Ranger open-house. I hope to present the GMA to
these new boys and their parents in such a way that both will motivated to
reach for it. Among my questions are: what have many of you used to promote
the GMA? Are there materials from GPH or other sources? One thing I thought
of was to say that having the GMA would look very good on applications for
college scholarships, but is there any evidence for that?
