Current- clear- but building..

Last Night~

Following yesterdays minor steam event on the mountian..

USGS Volcano expert Rick VanHusen attended the troop meeting
in his USGS uniform. Mr.Vanhusen serves as a assistant scoutmaster
and patrol advisor to out troop. He shared that the office was alive
with activity and endless phone calls from news groups.

Rick said that friday's event distroyed a sisemograph that was on the
lava dome and another had to be sent from Hawaii, and they had placed it
on foot.. since regulations prevented them flying the USGS chopper
onto the dome.

Rick recomends light weight hikeing boots that allow a person to RUN
if needed.. but with thick socks to protect against HEAT! He also
said that USGS persons interviewed on TV largely look like ageing
hippies because they are all earth science majors from the 70's!

*Follow-up on "what was lost" with the formation of the Mount
Saint Helens National monument.

(*My opinion only)

After the 1980 explosion... a large devistation area was cleared
and what remained was a light grey ground covering of pumice and
volcanic ash simular to the Moon's landscape.

*In my opinion "Perfect Dune Buggy off-road ATV parkland"

For miles in every direction, open sky and a unique desert
free of those "Big Trees" that get in the way of my 4x4..

We could have also had a mighty fine shoot'n pit for blast'n
away with AK's and such..

But no... Gates went up and No tresspass signs.
Don't drive off-road in the Volcano.. You might disturb the
devistation!<G>
