I have stopped using America Online as I find them to be the internet with training wheels.  They are a predatory company that should be avoided at all costs.  I apologize if you use AOL, but please when we say that they are trouble, please believe us.
A long while back now, I used to subscribe to Rangernet using these screen names : [EMAIL PROTECTED] , [EMAIL PROTECTED] , [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Here is my story, Way back when I used to use AOL, when I first moved to the town I live in presently, AOL had advertised this thing called a "Mobile Communicator" It was like a pocket pager but was able to send text messaging.  I thought that the device looked neat and the advertising said "Free Trial" for the first 30 days.  Well since I had an existing account, the account was tagged immediately and it completely shut me down. They automatically overdrafted everything causing a lot of money in damages. My name was reported to Check Systems and I was prevented from even using my checking account anywhere for well over a month. When they had done this to me I sent the device back and made all kinds of demands that they release me. I then cancelled their services and made the switch to broadband as provided by my cable TV provider, Adelphia.   I registered my own domain name which was not expensive to do and have been so much happier since I have control over the stuff that comes through my internet more than the nonsense that came through AOL.  Broadband is worth the cost. If you can get it, do it. Cable is better than DSL but yet DSL is even better than using anything that has to do with AOL. Dial up now belongs in the Smithsonian Institute next to Brontosaurus. I have been using broadband since 1999 and would never consider going back to dial up.   There are other options available and there are plenty of people who would be happy to assist you in getting it all set up too.  It is very hard for me to have any sympathy for a company that has done these things to anyone and I was not surprised to find out about the mass exodus of their subscribers going somewhere else, why? Because if this is how they do business, one should go somewhere else.

On the other hand, I wonder why any good rangetrnetter would have or want that terrible ISP.  They think they know more about what you should receive than you do.  There are other providers that give you nationwide access. I consider them the bully of the cyberworld.
