I appreciate the input from you guys. We tried the colored dot system for several years and found it was the root of our problem. We would need 8 different distinct colors and they are not available, usually only four or six colors. We even tried the neon colors & they were confused with the regular as they were so close in color. Cars were inadvertently put/ raced in the wrong category which caused numerous headaches. The last couple of years we have put the group logo on the left hand side, which is real plain to see, then the car number. The header reads: 2005 NSJ Section Pinewood Derby. New this year, will be more & different colored 2x4's for each group to put the cars on in the pit, which will help the judges as well as the pit crew. .
We tried the outright consecutive numbering system, but it caused trouble as well. Now we have a network of three computer stations and the gals assign the car numbers as they are brought in and registered at the stations. (Of course this is the final step after going though the weight & size check.) It worked real smooth last year that way. Our only real problem was cars being assigned to the wrong group on the registration form & thus race category by the parents or commanders. If the registration people had just verified the information that would have also gone out the door. It is just so hard to recruit people to work the race, but they can complain when things go wrong.
