Salam, Mak Ngah Malaysian Tanker Hijacked, Gas Oil Cargo Siphoned Off KUALA LUMPUR, Sept. 28 (Kyodo) -- Pirates in the Malacca Strait hijacked a Malaysian-registered tanker on Monday and siphoned off its cargo of 2,200 metric tons of gas oil before releasing the ship the next day, a spokesman for the International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Center said Thursday. The spokesman, who requested anonymity, confirmed a news report in the daily Star on Thursday. According to the Star report, the Petchem, which was hired by Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn. Bhd., left Port Dickson in the southwest of Malaysia on Saturday to cross the South China Sea for Kuching, the capital of Malaysia's Sarawak in Borneo Island. It was due to arrive in Kuching on Tuesday but at 2:30 a.m. Monday, near the Natuna Islands in Indonesian waters, it was intercepted by pirates. A center spokesman said all 13 crew members were locked up in the cabins and the pirates steered the ship to waters off the southeast of Malaysia's Johor where another pirate ship was waiting for the transfer of the cargo. A tank loaded with jet fuel was left untouched. The crew members were unharmed and freed themselves after the pirates left the vessel.
