CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

3 FELLOWSHIPS FOR POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS
For the academic year 2002-2003, the
Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin's Working Group
Modernity and Islam invites scholars to apply for
three   postdoctoral fellowships for the project

CULTURAL MOBILITY IN MIDDLE EASTERN LITERATURES.
This project, led by Friederike Pannewick (Freie
Universitt Berlin) examines the diverse reception and
exchange relationships between the literatures of the
Middle East and other areas of world literature. The
topical emphasis of the common work in the year
2002-2003 lies on research on the theme:

TRANSGRESSION   SACRIFICE TESTIMONY.
Addressed are such diverse phenomena as martyrdom in
modernity, the para-religious occupation of secular
processes and experiences, and the staging of
corporeality, always in the context of the culture of
remembrance, media transfer, and critique of
discourses. The project Cultural Mobility in Middle
Eastern Literatures intends to bring comparative
literature researchers of Middle Eastern philologies
together with researchers in other philologies and in
cultural studies. The Working Group Modernity and
Islam, as an interdisciplinary research network of the
Federal State of Berlin, is striving to tie regional
studies more closely to other disciplines. In several
independent projects, the attempt is being made to
expand the horizon of Europe's history, its present,
and its culture, which currently bears the strong
stamp of the national borders of the 19th century. To
ensure the inclusion of non-European experiences and
perspectives, it seeks closer cooperation with
researchers from non-European regions in the sense of
"research with, not on". The project Cultural Mobility
in Middle Eastern Literatures is expected to be funded
by Germany's Federal Ministry for Education and
search.

PREREQUISITES FOR APPLICATION
The fellowships are intended above all for scholars of
cultural studies and literature from the Middle East
who want to carry out their research projects in
connection with the project in Berlin, but also for
comparative literature researchers and specialists in
Middle Eastern literatures from other countries who
seek cooperation with other philologies and cultural
studies.

Fellows of the Working Group Modernity and Islam
receive the opportunity to pursue the research
projects of their choice in the framework of the
project Cultural Mobility in Middle Eastern
Literatures. In Berlin, they will be integrated in a
university or   non-university research institute.

Fellows will receive a monthly stipend of 1,800 Euro
(supplement for married Fellows: 250 Euro) and are
obligated to work in Berlin and to help shape the
project-related seminars and working discussions. As a
rule, the Fellowship begins on October 1, 2002 and
ends on September 30, 2003. In justified cases, the
stipend period can be shortened, but should cover at
least three months. The applicant's doctorate should
have been completed no earlier than 1996. The
application, consisting of a CV, a two- to four-page project
sketch, a sample of  scholarly work (maximum 20 pages
from a newspaper essay, conference paper, or
dissertation chapter), and evaluations (for applicants
from the Middle East, names or references suffice) by
two university instructors, should be submitted in
English and received by February 28, 2002 at:
