Greece rejects US naval ops
GREECE
has rejected an American request to allow the US Navy to carry out ship
interceptions in its territorial waters as part of the US
efforts to fight terrorism. The initial response of the Greek government was
that it would examine the issue together with EU partners - Italy,
France and Spain
- in receipt of similar requests. According to a government spokesman, foreign
minister George Papandreou looked into the US
request and rejected it on constitutional grounds and out of consideration for Greece's
independence and national sovereignty. The spokesman added that Greece
was willing to contribute to the fight against terrorism, but preferred to
carry out the ship inspections with its own forces. It has emerged that the US
request was made in March, but the matter only became public after a report by
the daily Eleftherotypia a few days ago.
