At 10:15 a.m. Thursday, 20 first-graders at Landmark Elementary School were
studying math when principal Jennifer Wildman came on the loudspeaker and told
the kids to get under their desks, cover their heads and hold on.

The students were taking part in the Great California ShakeOut, the largest
earthquake drill in the nation's history, and the first time that all of
California participated in the drill. Last year, only residents in Southern
California participated in the drill.

Nearly 7 million people were signed up to participate, said Susan Garcia, a
spokeswoman for the U.S. Geological Survey and a Bay Area co-coordinator for
the Great California ShakeOut.

Garcia said that almost 1 million people from the Bay Area participated.

Thousands of schools, businesses, nonprofit organizations, government agencies
and other groups took part in the drill, designed to prepare Californians to
protect themselves from falling material and other hazards during an earthquake.

"It's a day of earthquake preparedness and awareness," Garcia said. "We live in
earthquake country. An earthquake can happen at any time, and it's very
important to know how to protect yourself."

The fact that the first statewide earthquake drill fell near the 20th
anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake was a coincidence, Garcia said.
Organizers of the drill chose the third Thursday of October to be the annual
date for the drill.

The event was sponsored by the Earthquake Country Alliance, which is made up of
the California Emergency Management Agency, the Southern California Earthquake
Center, the U.S. Geological Survey, the California Earthquake Authority, the
American Red Cross and other organizations.
