I have the same feeling as you, double-clicking is natural for opening
files. But inside an application, a never misses it.

Anyhow, I tested a patch implementing multiple-selection some time ago,
and it was horrible - only because I needed to double-click on every
single picture.

And another point is, we have really no use for single-click (at the
moment) since we support no form of drag'n'drop. But maybe we should be
prepared for the day.
